The only enduring physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition exists at Pompeys Pillar, where Captain William Clark carved his name into the sandstone formation. This quilt art piece, "Clark's Mark" commemorates the July 25, 1806 passage of Clark and his party through this area along the Yellowstone River.

Clark's signature at Pompey's Pillar was digitally photographed and printed onto cotton fabric using an inkjet color printer to create the four corner pieces.

Photocopied images of Clark's handwritten journal entry dated July 25, 1806 were obtained from the archives at the American Philosophical Society. These were photocopied onto handpainted fabric, and sewn together to create the quilt border.

The sky, sandstone pillar image, and vegetation were handpainted and manipulated on separate pieces of fabric, joined together with hand appliqué, and subsequently quilted by machine.
